For me, this is a memory from nearly every mid-winter’s hike in the mountain forests north of Santa Fe: the site of young trees reaching up through the cold, deep snow. There must be something inspirational here about the survival of nature in the most difficult of environments… But for me it’s as much about the great feeling of having the frigid mountain air rushing through my lungs, or about seeing the sunlight reflected off the snow crystals on the ground, or about how shadows at 10,000-foot elevation seem to stretch forever.
